William - Ride to the Sea STOP PRESS!!
| Broken Collarbone |
   |
Unfortunately William sustained a badly broken collarbone 3 weeks before his planned attempt date. However, inspired by Lance Armstrong who also broke his collarbone earlier this year but will still try to win his 8th Tour de France, William has set a new date of the 11th July. GOOD LUCK WILLIAM!! |

A 90 mile cycle ride would be a truly daunting prospect for most of us, but for 11 year old William Gascoyne it is the challenge he has set himself: on 21st June he is to cycle from Ogston Sailing Club in Derbyshire to Mablethorpe on the Lincolnshire coast - 'to see if he can do it'! He is also hoping to raise money for Sail 4 Cancer in the process. At approximately 90 miles it is much further than William has ever cycled before. He will be mainly unsupported on the trip, but will be accompanied by dad, Stuart, for safety reasons. His route will take him through three counties, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, across the M1 and A1, through former mining communities and ancient villages, past the edge of Sherwood Forest, alongside Fossdyke, through the city of Lincoln and the rich agricultural land of Lincolnshire before ending at the seaside resort of Mablethorpe. A truly epic ride and a challenge that is all the more remarkable given William's age.
A pupil at Deerpark Primary School in Wingerworth, Derbyshire, William is both a keen sailor and cyclist. He is a member of the Junior Fleet at Ogston Sailing Club and a member of Heanor Clarion Cycling Club. Sail 4 Cancer is the supported charity of Ogston Sailing Club.
